A validation order lets the court approve company payments after a winding up petition, so they are not void if the company is wound up. For Manchester companies, the county court hearing centre on Bridge Street West has insolvency jurisdiction. A company with paid-up share capital over £120,000 can only be wound up in the High Court. I am Femi Ogunshakin, an insolvency solicitor acting for companies facing winding up petitions across England and Wales. Your first 30-minute consultation is free.
The company's paid-up share capital decides whether the county court route is open. The county court hearing centre and the Business and Property Courts in Manchester share one building, the Civil Justice Centre on Bridge Street West.
Manchester Civil Justice Centre (Civil and Family Courts), 1 Bridge Street West, Manchester, M60 9DJ. The Insolvency Rules give the Manchester hearing centre jurisdiction over corporate insolvency, which covers winding up. It can hear petitions against companies with paid-up share capital of £120,000 or less.
Above £120,000 of paid-up share capital, the county court has no jurisdiction and only the High Court can wind the company up. Manchester is a Business and Property Courts district registry for Chancery work, housed at the same Bridge Street West address.
The court fixes the venue when the petition is filed and endorses it on the petition. The Gazette notice names the same venue.
The London rule, which sends every petition to the High Court, does not reach Manchester companies. It applies only where the registered office is in the London insolvency district, and Manchester is not part of it.
Not always Manchester. Five other Greater Manchester hearing centres have the same insolvency jurisdiction, so read the court name on the petition before anything else.
Salford, Rochdale, Tameside and Trafford have no hearing centre of their own in that list. I have not mapped postcodes to centres, so a Salford or Trafford director should go by the petition itself.
The company applies for a validation order after the petition is presented. A bid to stop the advertisement must go to the court or hearing centre where the petition is pending.
Insolvency cases can be moved. The Practice Direction allows transfer to a hearing centre at a Business and Property Court on the same circuit, or to a listed specialist centre. Preston is the only specialist centre on that list in the North West.

Manchester runs on services. Agencies, consultancies, kitchens, couriers and back-office firms carry weekly or monthly payroll that cannot wait for a hearing date. Once the petition is in the Gazette, banks usually freeze the account within about 48 hours.
In 2026 the city had 24,550 enterprises, and 87.3% of them employed fewer than ten people. In 2024, professional, scientific and technical firms provided 13.2% of employee jobs, against 9.6% across the North West. Administrative and support services, which include staffing and facilities firms, provided 11.5%.
Finance, tech, logistics and hospitality all sat above the regional share that year. Manufacturing and construction sat well below it, at 2.6% and 2.0% of jobs.
For a firm whose costs are mostly people and premises, the order sought is mainly about wages, rent and key suppliers. Routine trading payments like these are regularly allowed. Money moving to directors or connected companies rarely is.
If wages fall due before the evidence is complete, the court may grant limited relief for a short period. It still needs enough evidence that creditors are unlikely to be prejudiced.
If payroll is days away, say so when you call. I will tell you straight away whether the timing works.
Five stages. Two of them decide whether the company can keep paying people.
I do not have an office in the city or the wider North West. I act for companies across England and Wales, and you deal with me directly.
The court named on the petition. That may be Manchester, or Bolton, Oldham, Stockport, Bury or Wigan, which all have insolvency jurisdiction.
No. Only companies whose registered office is in the London insolvency district must start in the High Court.
Then the county court cannot wind it up and the petition belongs in the High Court. I will go through the venue with you on the first call.
Yes, where payments such as wages are essential to keep trading. The court may then grant limited relief for a short period while the rest of the evidence is gathered.
No. It covers payments only. If the petition debt stays unpaid, the court can still make a winding up order.

The fixed fee for a validation order application is £10,000 to £15,000 plus VAT, depending on the size of the petition debt. See the full fee breakdown.
Who you will deal with
Femi O. Ogunshakin
Solicitor, Tax Adviser and Former HMRC Inspector
Validation order applications are a large part of my practice. Most of the petitions I deal with are brought by HMRC, and my time as an HMRC inspector means I know how the petitioning side builds and runs these cases.
You will deal with me directly rather than with an introducer or a case handler. The work is carried out through Nexa Law, where I practise. The first 30 minutes are free.
If a winding up petition has reached your Manchester company, act quickly. Tell me the court named on the petition and the hearing date, and we can look at the timing together. I offer a free 30-minute consultation to help you explore your options and protect your business.
